Club history

Some of the clubs Jumpers over the years

Mernda Football Club was originally formed as South Yan-Yean Football Club in December 1903 and played our first season in 1904 in the Whittlesea District Football League. In 1906 we joined the Bourke-Evelyn Football League and played there under the South Yan-Yean name until 1913. In 1914 we changed our name to Mernda Football Club and continued playing until World War1, the association went into recess between 1915 to 1918.

In 1919 our Club resumed playing under the name of the Mernda Football Club until the end of 1931. In 1932 when several local clubs merged together and changed the Club’s name to the Plenty Rovers Football Club as it remained until 1964. In 1965 the Club’s name was changed back to the Mernda Football Club as it remains today.

The first ground on which the Club played was on Plenty Road, near the Catholic Church in the paddock opposite the old Lambs Inn. We then moved to Orgills Paddock opposite the Railway Station. The Clubs next move was to Doreen where we played until 1964.

Our last move is to the present ground in Schotters Road Mernda, which was purchased by the Recreation Reserve Committee for 500 pounds in 1950 from the Green Family.

Our Club plays a tough, competitive brand of football and has done so for many years. Today we are known as the Mernda Demons, playing in the Diamond Valley Football League. Watch out for the Mernda Demons as we plan to come back with vengeance in 2002.

Most of our clubs memorabilia was destroyed in a fire in the sixties, however we have found a few old photo's like the pictures featured above.  We would be grateful for any donations of old pictures, or memorabilia that may be related to our clubs past.
